Path to Project Management: Insights from a BPM Project Manager
Becoming a project manager is a journey marked by continuous learning, evolving challenges, and rewarding milestones. At BPM, we pride ourselves on nurturing talent that is passionate about construction and project management.
Today, we are sharing insights from our resident Junior Project Manager, Nicolas Rowe. He discovered his passion for project management at the age of just 18, during his final year of High School. We sat down with Nicholas to talk about his journey into Project Management, tips for those considering it as a career and what he enjoys about life at BPM.
Discovering a Passion for Project Management
Growing up, Nicolas had a keen interest in the construction industry. He was drawn to project management because of this interest and the appeal of solving difficult problems, setting big goals, and seeing ideas become real. “Once I realised that project management includes everything I love, it was an easy choice for me," he says.
Educational Pathways
Knowing the importance of a good education, he studied Building Science at Victoria University of Wellington with a focus on Project Management and Sustainable Engineering Systems." Slated to graduate at the end of 2024 “the degree not only provides me with theoretical knowledge but also practical insights that are crucial in the real world,” he notes.
Managing Stress and Pressure
Stress is an inevitable part of any job, especially in a field as dynamic as project management. Nicholas emphasises the importance of breaking down tasks into manageable segments to mitigate overwhelming situations. “Taking a step back and organising my workload helps me focus on achieving smaller, manageable goals”.
Lessons Learned on the Journey
The journey to becoming a seasoned project manager is laden with valuable lessons. “One of the most crucial lessons I’ve learned is the importance of absorbing as much information as possible, whether from uni or from work peers,” Nicolas says.
Advice for Aspiring Project Managers
For those embarking on their own journey in project management, his advice is straightforward: “Never be afraid to ask questions or admit when you’re wrong. These moments are often when you’ll learn the most.” He also encourages newcomers to enjoy the process and actively seek opportunities that will aid in their professional growth.
The Best Aspects of Working at BPM
Reflecting on his time at BPM, he highlights the supportive environment and the abundance of opportunities as the most beneficial aspects of his experience. “The welcoming team and the positive workplace culture here not only help me grow professionally but also ensure a healthy work-life balance”.
