How our holistic approach to Project Management gets you the best outcome

At BPM, we understand that to get (good) sh*t done, we need good people. This approach focuses on hiring the right people, nurturing junior talent, and fostering industry sustainability—making it a win-win for clients and the industry alike.

With that in mind, in this blog we’ll get into how we challenge the status quo and introduce you to Junior Project Manager Nick, who has recently stepped up from cadet. He’s just starting his journey in the world of project management and following in the footsteps of others before him like PMs Jake and Jack – who have been with BPM for six years and four years respectively - after traversing that same pathway Nick is on.

By taking a holistic approach to project management and nurturing talent within our fold, we make sure we have the best people and set the bar for consistent, top-quality outcomes that benefit everyone involved.

Mentorship and teamwork make the dream work.

Bringing on the right people

We do things a little bit differently around here. Our approach starts with fit. We believe that building a team with shared values is the building block for team success and project success. Building a team that embodies integrity, expertise, and a commitment to excellence but also likes a good laugh. Dad jokes go a long way at our place.

We grow by recruiting experienced Senior Project Managers with a track record of success, and junior team members eager to learn, grow, and establish their project management careers in a supportive environment.

Our cadets get the benefit of working along-side experienced PMs but are taught to think quick, problem solve and pick up the slack by helping across a range of business areas. Grunt work too. It’s all hands-on deck and we all pitch in wherever it’s needed.

Our recruitment strategy emphasises diversity in skills and perspectives, ensuring that we can handle every facet of a project with depth and insight.

We believe that bringing on the right people isn’t just about their technical skills but about building a cohesive team that can think on its feet, communicate effectively, and adapt to changing conditions seamlessly.

Why the right team matters

Teamwork makes the dream work and hiring the right people reduces friction, enhances communication, and helps avoid costly misunderstandings.

A well-suited team can anticipate issues before they arise, suggesting proactive solutions that improve both efficiency and quality. For our clients, this means projects are delivered smoothly, within budget, and to the highest standards.

Investing in Junior Project Managers and the future of our industry

Future-proofing our industry means making sure the next generation of project managers is well-prepared. We invest heavily in training Junior Project Managers, providing them with mentorship, hands-on experience, and access to the latest project management tools and technology. This isn’t just beneficial for our team — it’s a key factor in ensuring your project is done well.

With this focus on upskilling, junior team members gain the competence and confidence to make valuable contributions from day one. They work closely alongside our experienced team, learning not only best practices but how to handle unexpected challenges and manage client relationships.

As they gain experience, these junior team members are able to take on more responsibilities, ensuring our project teams have a steady flow of talent ready to step up when needed.

We’ve had some incredible juniors start their project management career with us, one of which has been Nick. Nick has been with us since early 2024 and has been following in the footsteps of others like Jake and Jack, who are now valued project managers.

Jake, Jack and the rest of the team lead by example, enabling Nick to develop his skills, including some rather dubious latte art (coffee is big around here, too) – to grow into an all-round brilliant Junior Project Manager.

Here’s a wee insight into Nick’s experience:

Nick was studying and was actively seeking a role within this space, but it wasn’t just the project management element that enticed him to reach out:

“After learning about the type of work BPM do and the qualities they value, I reached out to Dan. Within a few weeks, we met for a coffee, and I secured a part-time cadet role where I have now transitioned into a full-time Junior Project Manager role.

BPM has consistently supported me throughout my studies. Whether it was providing a flexible working environment that allowed me to take time off for lectures and tutorials, or offering additional help with my learning - their support has been invaluable.

Most importantly, BPM has given me insight into the realities of project management.

Balancing work and university was a challenging task, but it taught me how to handle the stressful and overlapping demands of both. This experience has greatly improved my ability to manage and navigate similar situations effectively.”

Nick found the mentorship and lessons learned within BPM a positive and uplifting experience both professionally and personally.

“I believe everyone at BPM has been a mentor to me in some way, but having guidance from people like Jake, Matt, and Dan has been particularly invaluable during this transition and development.

Jake has been a great support, as he followed a similar path through the same degree and starting position at BPM. His knowledge and insights have been incredibly helpful, and working alongside him every day has taught me valuable lessons and practices.

Having the experience and business minds of people like Dan and Matt has greatly been valuable to my learnings.

Knowing that I have the expertise and guidance from people like this gives me great confidence in the work I do and how I will progress with in the industry.”

Speaking to how BPM deviates from the status quo, Nick further elaborates:

“From what I’ve observed and learned from my peers in other roles, BPM is a company where being employed doesn’t result in a feeling like another number. Despite being the youngest and having no prior experience, my progress was never hindered by this status.

At BPM, the focus has always been on growth and improvement, and having incredible colleagues from diverse backgrounds has been crucial to my learning.

Unlike other companies, BPM doesn’t just encourage me to focus and excel at project management, but rather I’ve had the opportunity to work in and assist with areas of the business I likely wouldn’t have experienced elsewhere.”

Prioritising long-term sustainability in the industry

In construction, thinking beyond the immediate project lifecycle is essential. By investing in our people, we’re able to think and act long term. It’s our mission to make the construction industry a better place to be in terms of quality, safety and well-being, both now and in the future.

We want to help our junior project managers foster this approach, setting them on the right path for epic projects in the construction industry.

Dan experienced his own form of guidance and mentorship first-hand, and talks more about the value in leading by example:

“Developing talent is something I am very passionate about in our business. I am very much a believer of deep end learning and providing access to opportunities in roles that are unlikely to be given elsewhere. Coming through the ranks I was fortunate enough to have some great bosses and mentors that did the same for me and trusted that I would do the job – I’m just giving that back.

But I am also a believer of holistic mentorship and development. As part of the growth of young talent, we owe them not only to foster project management skills, but also skills on how to deal with health, fitness, finances, and life skills. For some, this is the first time they’ve had to deal with work pressure, or dealing with different personalities and varied types of people.

There is only one way to gain experience, and that is through experience. But it’s the experience of others that can make a path much easier to walk, and that applies to more than just your job.”

You’re part of our team

A holistic approach to project management involves making you, the client, a central part of the process, alongside our carefully curated team. From residential projects to large commercial projects, and everything in between, our junior and senior team members walk the walk with you.

We practice open communication and collaboration, so together we’re able to tailor our strategies to align with your goals and make the journey an enjoyable experience for all involved.

You might frequently hear us say things like “teamwork makes the dream work” and “challenge the status quo”. It’s not just for show, these are the values that we work to every day. Including, the greatest wealth is health, don’t be a jerk, we get (good) sh*t done and we are what we do - not what we say we’ll do.

And honestly, you can hold us to that.

The importance of values in project management.

BPM’s ethical approach builds trust, reduces risk, and leads to stronger relationships with all project stakeholders. When you know you’re working with a team that values integrity, you can have confidence that your project will be managed with your best interests in mind. This means fewer surprises, greater peace of mind, and the assurance that your project is in capable, trustworthy hands.

Why a holistic approach matters

Construction projects are complex, with moving parts that demand meticulous attention and constant coordination. By taking a holistic approach, BPM can deliver results that aren’t just effective but also forward-thinking and sustainable. In every project we undertake, our team is aligned to go beyond expectations and deliver exceptional value. This is our promise at BPM—to take a holistic approach to project management so that our clients, our teams, and our industry can get (good) sh*t done!

If we’ve said some stuff in here that makes you think we’ll get along well then please get in touch. Let’s do some (good) sh*t together.
