Wellington Gold Awards 2022
No strangers to the Wellington Gold Awards, BPM were back for our fifth year as finalists.
In 2021 we took home the gold for the ACC Workplace Safety Award and this year we were aiming for the Team Gold Award. An award that is given to a workplace that has outstanding HR and wellbeing policies. What could sound more like us?
This year our entry revolved around the teams new WHOOPs and the creation of Wellbeing in Construction by BPM. WHOOP is a piece of wearable tech, like a fitness-tracker but with more than your average Fitbit. It measures each of our team’s strain, recovery, and sleep so that we know when we need to rest or can push ourselves harder at work (or in the gym). The team have our own group on the app with the option to compare metrics and encourage/help each other. This helps create a safer place for conversations in the office, making it easier for the team to talk to each other about other issues they may be facing. In a time when Covid is spreading faster than we can test for, our WHOOP’s can let us know that something might be wrong through early detection and tracking what is or isn’t normal for our individual bodies, wellbeing, and baselines.
The WHOOP health monitor helps our team understand their body on a new level by providing big-picture metrics for respiratory-rate/heart-rate-variability/resting-heart rate/blood-oxygen and skin-temperature. By understanding ‘our normal’ we can better identify when we’re not feeling ok. WHOOP also provides personalised suggestions on how to improve our overall health based on our data.
Wellbeing in Construction is an initiative that has spawn from our focus to improve the overall wellbeing of the industry following our recognition at the 2021 Gold Awards (ACC Workplace Safety Award). This brand extension will be known as Wellbeing in Construction by BPM. We have big plans for Wellbeing in Construction that include it becoming its own entity. We envision it helping people who can then help others with their own wellbeing journeys. Our process so far has led to us hearing stories from those that have already been inspired by our company, such has as Ben who turned his health around and is now in training to climb Mt Kilimanjaro on Christmas Day.
Our mission with Wellbeing in Construction is to partner with industry leaders and use frameworks, training, and promotion to educate and encourage those in the construction industry (including our team) leading to reducing the suicide stats in one of the industries with the highest rates of suicide in NZ.
Every year we go up against some strong competitors and unfortunately this meant that we didn’t win this year but you can bet that we’ll be trying again next year with even more (good) sh*t and ways to challenge the status quo!
